Bulgaria History Trail

Travel in time as our tour takes you through diverse nature and variety of terrain, revealing the rich cultural heritage and historical delights of this magical country. Bulgaria is a country of wonders! There are traditional villages and ancient monasteries to visit, awesome Roman amphitheatres and impressive medieval towns with winding cobbled streets. Highlights of our tour include a visit to the Rila Monastery, one of the most important spiritual and cultural centres of Bulgaria and to the medieval Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo, a truly unique fortress-town with remains of ancient stone houses clinging to steep slopes. So come on board, sit back and indulge in a wealth of experiences.

The tour operates Sunday on the following dates - June: 4,18 • August: 20 • September: 10

Day 1, Sunday

Fly to Bourgas Airport where you will be met by your Tour Manager and transferred to your arrival hotel for the first night.

Day 2, Monday

Depart for Plovdiv after breakfast with en-route sightseeing and stop for lunch at Stara Zagora. In Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second largest city, you will immerse in its cultural heritage by visiting the wonderfully preserved Old Town and its most famous landmark, the Roman Amphitheatre.

Day 3, Tuesday

Morning journey towards Bansko amidst peaceful scenery of the Rhodope mountain range, passing through charming local villages. There is a guided walking tour of Pirin National Park upon arrival in Bansko, with picnic lunch on the mountain. Time at leisure to explore Bansko Old Town.

Day 4, Wednesday

Full guided tour of the Rila Monastery, the largest and most impressive cultural monument of the Bulgarian Renaissance period. After lunch you will continue to Bulgaria's capital Sofia, to appreciate the city's unique architecture which blends Western and Central European influences.

Day 5, Thursday

Having left the present capital of Bulgaria, it's time to get to know the old one – on route to Veliko Tarnovo there is a stop to explore the Etara open air museum and enjoy a traditional lunch. Continuing to Veliko Tarnovo, former seat of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom with guided tour of Tsarevets fortress. Overnight at the picturesque village of Arbanassi.

Day 6, Friday

Sightseeing of Arbanassi follows breakfast, featuring outstanding historical monuments. The tour towards Varna briefly stops in the town of Shoumen for lunch and wine tasting. Once at the seaside city of Varna, you will discover remains of ancient Greek colony and historic trading port.

Day 7, Saturday

The day is spent enjoying the delights of Bulgaria's most popular travel destination Sunny Beach and the picturesque promontory town of Nessebar, justly under UNESCO  preservation order as a living museum. Lunch at one of the local tavernas before ending the tour in Bourgas.

Day 8, Sunday

Transfer to Bourgas Airport for your homeward journey or hotel of your choice in Sunny Beach or Nessebar for extended stay.
