This beautiful country, known as the ”Green Heart of Europe”, is tucked into a mountainous corner between Austria, Italy, Hungary and the Adriatic Sea. Everything in Slovenia is in abundance: the majestic Julian Alps with their glacial valleys, sparkling rivers, crystal clear lakes and breathtaking waterfalls, deep forests and mysterious karst caves, fascinating mediaeval towns, beautiful castles and gothic churches and the warm Adriatic. The coastline of Slovenia is a fertile land, exploding with every type of greenery and plant life, vast orchards of olive and cherry trees, rich, versatile and bathing in hot summer rays. Further up are the imposing solitary peaks of the Julian Alps, mirrored in the deep blue waters of the lakes.

Activities
This is a heaven for adventurous spirits with a huge variety of exciting activities to suit every taste. The coastal areas offer an endless choice of watersports, including sailing, windsurfing, diving and swimming or a refreshing dip in the spring and mud baths in the resort of Portoroz. And if you tire of the beach and its attractions, the beautiful lakes and mountain regions offer horseback riding, river rafting, kayaking, fishing, hunting, hiking and for the more courageous, a chance to visit the subterranean world of mysterious caves.

Entertainment
And the enjoyment doesn’t end when the night falls. There are musical concerts of all kinds, folklore parties, pop entertainment and many carnivals celebrating the different ancient traditions of this magical land. Laughter and music spills out from the inviting bars and cafes and dancing on the streets often carries out late into the night. There are casinos in Portoroz, Bled and some of the larger towns.

Food and Drinks
Dining out is a fascinating and delightful experience. Slovenian cuisine is greatly influenced by its neighbour’s taste in food and sausages, strudels, risottos and ravioli are widely available together with a staggering choice of more than 1200 national dishes (amongst which more than 100 different soups). A real Slovenian treat is ”potica”, a cake prepared with the widest variety of sweet or savoury fillings or the delicious loaves of bread which vary from region to region. There are also many interesting fish and meat dishes for you to indulge. And to please your taste buds even further, there are some truly outstanding strong red, fruity white and rose wines which compare favourably to the rest of the world and are an excellent value for money.

Money Matters
The monetary unit in Slovenia is the Tolar and there are approx. 348.70 Tolars to £1.00 (at April, 2005). Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airports, banks, exchange bureaux, post offices and hotels with cash machines available in all larger cities and the more important tourist areas. All major credit cards are accepted in the large resorts.
