Founded as a Roman settlement, Bourgas has been the Summer 09 Home of few different cultures through the last two centuries. The town receives its name after the Greek words "pirgos" or "bourgos", meaning fortress, or tower, provoked by the numerous fishing towers - "bourgs" in the vicinity. Burnt down in the 19th century, it was brought back to life again and turned into an important administrative, economic and cultural centre of Bulgaria.
Today Bourgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria. The climate here is temperately continental with a distinct impact from the Black Sea. The favourable geographical location and advanced transport infrastructure of Bourgas makes the city is a starting point for visiting the seaside resorts in the area - Sunny Beach, Nessebur to the north, Sozopol and Primorsko on the south.
What most attracts people here is undoubtedly the sea. The sandy beach stretches about 2 km along the Bourgas bay dotted with small restaurants and beach bars. A favourite route for a night out will go through the lively town centre and would finish at the sea garden under sea breeze and the lights of the fountains, small cafes, pubs and discos scattered around the park.
