The well-known sport winter centre Poiana Brasov is situated 170 km away from Bucharest and is one of the most frequented resorts in Romania, mostly because of its modern sports infrastructure, including artificial skating ring, sport fields and riding centres. There is an Olympic ski-track, two 80 metres high ski-jumps, and 12 downhill and slalom runs. One of the advantages of the resort is the artificial snow making installation which enables the most passionate skiers to practice their favourite sport from autumn until spring. Another attraction you will find here is the opportunity to ride in a horse-drawn sleigh.
Beginners
Poiana Brasov is perfect for beginners. The nursery slopes are wide and gentle and there is a plateau at the top of the mountain. The excellent English speaking ski instructors make learning great fun, and normally there are about 10-12 people appointed to each class. At the end of the learning week most beginners can afford to ski at the blue run from the top of the Christianu Mare all the way down to the village.
Intermediates
This is a good resort for intermediate skiers to improve their skills as the blue runs are not too testing and not too crowded, great for perfecting your parallel turn. Try the red runs that take you over varied terrain. Please make the most of the excellent ski school.
Advanced
Advanced skiers will find skiing limited as there are only a few black runs.
Floodlit Skiing
Floodlights have been installed on the lower slopes so that you can enjoy your skiing until 9 o’clock in the evenings. So that you can enjoy the après-ski until late at night, have a lie in and still get a full day’s skiing! Cool!
Snowboarding
The gentle slopes are ideal for learning, and if you are an experienced boarder there are boards available for hire too.
Ski Lifts
There is a well maintained system of ski lifts, open daily from 09:00 am - 09:00 pm. Each cable car is closed for one day per week for maintenance.
Cross Country
There are 9 km of marked runs. Cross country skis can be hired from the ski depot in Hotel Sport.
Après-ski
Poiana Brasov is fun, lively and great value for money. There is a wide range of bars, restaurants and discos to choose from, open until late in the evening. A bottle of beer costs about 80 pence and a bottle of wine £3. There is also opportunity to go swimming, horse riding and bowling. For an authentic Romanian evening we recommended an evening spent at either "Dacian’s Lounge" or "The Outlaws Hut". Both restaurants have a lively atmosphere with Romanian folk music and server delicious and plentiful cuisine.
Excursions
City tour of Brasov with its fascinating historic centre is just 13 km away from the resort. Guests can visit the tower and bastion fortifications dating from XVth century, Saint Bartholomew church (XIIIth century), the famous Black Church - the most imposing cathedral in Romania, built between 1385 and 1476, as well as the Municipality Council House built in 1420 and now transformed into a museum.
You can also enjoy a relatively cheap shopping spree and the various cafes, restaurants and patiseries scattered around the center of Brasov.
Dracula’s Castle - a day out to really get your teeth into! Legend has it that Count Dracula, the mediaeval Prince of Transylvania, lived in Bran Castle. A fantastic trip with lunch at Moeciu.
Peles Castle: This was the former residence of the Romanian Royal Family. Set in beautiful surroundings, with the breathtaking interior. We recommend this for a half day visit.
Wine tasting at the "Carpathian Stag" restaurant and wine cellar alongside folk music, dancing and Romanian cuisine.
