Romania is situated in the southeastern part of Central Europe and shares borders with Hungary to the northwest, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, the Black Sea to the southeast, Ukraine to the east and to the north and the Republic of Moldova to the east. Its capital is the city of Bucharest.

The majestic Southern Carpathian Mountains that cut through Romania have long been popular with international tourists heading for the skillfully prepared slopes, desperate to try a new skiing destination.

Romania is famous for being home to Europe's highest population of Brown Bears and home to over a third of all European plant species the Carpathians are now becoming more recognised for their fantastic up and coming ski and snowboard resorts. Without doubt Romania's most popular and most developed ski resort is Poiana Brasov, which continues to grow each year in popularity due to its continued investment in its infrastructure, while still remaining fantastic value for money.

The well-known winter sport centre Poiana Brasov is situated 170 km away from Bucharest and is one of the most frequented resorts in Romania, mostly because of its modern sports infrastructure, including artificial skating rink, sport fields, riding centres and a Gondola lift with a capacity of 2000 skiers per hour. There is an Olympic ski-track, two 80 metres high ski-jumps, and 12 downhill and slalom runs. One of the advantages of the resort is the artificial snow providing insulation which enables the most passionate skiers to practice their favourite sport from autumn until spring. Another attraction you will find here is the opportunity to ride in a horse-drawn sleigh.

In Summertime, experience the beautiful countryside while hiking or horse back riding and learning the art of equestrianism while being guided by qualified instructors. Discover the natural wonders of the mountains and visit beautiful medieval towns such as Brasov, Sibiu or Sighisoara which are located in the heart of Transylvania. Guests can choose between the 4* Hotel Bradul or Sport.

  • Dracula’s Castle - a day out to really get your teeth into! Legend has it that Count Dracula, the mediaeval Prince of Transylvania, lived in Bran Castle. A fantastic trip with lunch at Moeciu.
  • City tour of Brasov with its fascinating historic centre is just 13 km away from the resort.
  • Peles Castle: This was the former residence of the Romanian Royal Family. Set in beautiful surroundings, with the breathtaking interior. We recommend this for a half day visit.
  • Wine tasting at the "Carpathian Stag" restaurant and wine cellar alongside folk music, dancing and Romanian cuisine.

Winters in Romania are cold, especially in the mountains. Snowfall is present between the months of December to mid-March when temperatures often are well below zero. When packing for a winter ski holiday to Romania warm clothes and sturdy footwear is a must as is sunglasses and sun factor as the sun against the snow is strong and reflective.

Summers are generally very warm to hot, with summer (June to August) average maximum temperatures in the lower part of the country being around 28 °C (82 °F).

Mrs. Davis, Sozopol
A great holiday - will come back again

Mrs. Crawford, Sunny Beach
Not long after our arrival in Bulgaria, after our wine tasting early on Saturday morning, I fell, cutting my leg very badly and subsequently fainted. I am now receiving treatment from my own doctor in England, it is a great relief to know that all the care I received in Bulgaria has been appropriate and that the wound is progressing satisfactorily and is responding to treatment. I would like to commend to Balkan Holidays all their staff who is involved in helping me in this unfortunate accident. Although I tried to thank them all the time, I would hope that my gratitude can be passed on by the company. I am looking forward to traveling with you again in the future.

Ms. Smith, Pamporovo
Fantastic first ski holiday will return- exceed expectations and the ski instructor RADO made it extra special.
