>> Romania Mountains

With a surface area of 238,391 square kilometres Romania is the largest country in Southeastern Europe. Its terrain is distributed roughly equally between mountainous, hilly and lowland territories. The Carpathian Mountains dominate the centre of Romania, with 14 mountain ranges reaching above 2,000 m/6,600 ft. These are surrounded by the Moldavian and Transylvanian plateaus and Pannonian and Wallachian plains.

A large part of Romania's border with Serbia and Bulgaria is formed by the Danube. Prut River, one of its major tributaries, forms the border with the Republic of Moldova. The Danube flows into the Black Sea within Romania's territory forming the Danube Delta, the second largest and the best preserved delta in Europe, and a biosphere reserve and a biodiversity World Heritage Site.

What to see and do

Transylvanian cities such as Sibiu, Braşov, Sighişoara, Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureş attract with their medieval atmosphere and castles. The resorts along the Black Sea cost offer variety of water sports and the largest Aqua Park on the Black Sea coast is to be found in Mamaia.

Food and Drink

The Romanian cuisine is distinct but has influences from other European countries.  You can spot similarities to Greek, German, and Italian cuisine.  Here's a sample of some of the local foods you'll find:

Mamaliga - ground corn dish, similar to Italian polenta and American grits.  Often combined with cheese and sour cream; Sarmale - minced meat and rice wrapped in pickled cabbage; Mici - grilled stick of minced beef and lamb; Ciorba - soups prepared in numerous ways, often with a tomato or cream base.  Plus lots of grill meats, sausages (carnati), and breads (paine).
If you get thirsty after a heavy meal, try some tuica, a strong plum wine.

Shopping

Specialist purchases include embroideries, pottery, porcelain, silverware, carpets, ceramics, crystal, glassware, fabrics, wool jumpers, woodcarvings, metal, leather goods, rugs, glass paintings and silk dresses.

Currency

The monetary unit in Romania is Lei & there are approximately 5.76 Lei to £1.00 (August 2012). Notes are in denominations of Lei 200, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1.

It is recommended that visitors bring Euros, as these can be easily exchanged by shops, restaurants and hotels. Pounds Sterling can be easily exchanged in the resorts,  at banks, larger hotels and airports and at authorized exchange offices (Birou de Schimb Valutar). Credit/Debit Cards -  American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted by large hotels, car hire companies and some restaurants and shops. ATMs (bancomat) accepting MasterCard and Visa can be found in main banks, airports and shopping centers, but should not be relied upon as a sole source of cash.

Traveller's Cheques - like credit and debit cards, these are usually only useful in hotels and for obtaining cash at the bank or selected exchange offices. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars or Euros.

Climate

Summers are generally very warm to hot, with summer (June to August) average maximum temperatures in the lower part of the country being around 28 °C (82 °F).

Mr. Payne, Nessebar
The food and beverage restaurants and bar quality was always the highest standard and it was en enjoyable experience to visit them. We were also very pleased with the variety offered. The staffs in all areas were caring and professional in their approach to all that they were asked to do and genuine in their approach and interaction with all guests. The hotel and grounds were remarkably clean and hygienic with cleaning seemingly to be a very high priority. The entertainment team were so energetic, fun and throughly nice people who all were so professional. We did have a great holiday and I am certain that we will be back.
