Slovene Tolar (SIT) = 100 stotins. Notes are in denominations
of SIT10,000, 5000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and
10. Coins are in denominations of SIT5, 2 and 1, and
50 stotins.
The Tolar is fully convertible within Slovenia, but
visitors are advised to exchange surplus amounts to
the currency of their choice before leaving Slovenia,
as they are not generally exchangeable elsewhere.
Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, some
hotels and camping grounds, most tourist agencies, supermarkets,
petrol stations and exchange bureaux. Credit cards are
accepted at upscale restaurants, shops and hotels, but
elsewhere you must use cash. Only a few of Slovenia's
ATMs are accessible to foreign account holders, but
more and more are coming online. Credit card holders
can get cash advances in tolars from some banks. To
avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are
advised to take travelers cheques in US Dollars or Pounds
Sterling.
Exchange rate is not fixed and fluctuates within
1-2%. Scottish notes are not accepted. Please, note
that old or marked notes and coins are not accepted.
Check the current exchange rate on Yahoo!
Finance Converter.

| Meals
and Drinks |
|
|
Slovenian cuisine has been greatly influenced by the
surrounding countries, for example Austria and Italy.
Main meals often consist of soup and a meat (pork, beef)
or fish dish accompanied by salad and bread.
Milk and cheese, especially cottage cheese, are traditional
to the Slovene diet.
Slovenia lies on the southern slopes of the Alps and
touches the Mediterranean, so it enjoys the benefit
of the best of both worlds, as well as climatic uncertainties
from both the north and the south. The country has also
always been the crossroads between north and south,
east and west and travelers have brought viticultural
knowledge from all the prominent viticultural nations.
Coffee is either Turkish or Espresso and herbal and
iced teas are popular. Fruit juices are produced locally.
Alcoholic drinks include wine, beer and plum brandy
(Slivovica).

| Getting Around |
|
| Except for long journeys, bus is the preferred
way of getting around Slovenia. There are frequent departures
and the network has an octopus' reach across the country.
In some cases, there's no choice; traveling by bus is
the only practical way to get to Bled and Bohinj, the
Julian Alps and much of the coast from Ljubljana. You
might need to make a reservation on Friday afternoons,
when many students leave Ljubljana for the weekend. With
the exception of the new ICS express train between Ljubljana
and Maribor, travel by rail is best left to sightseers:
one of the prettiest rides chugs through the Soca Valley. |

| Medical Attention |
|
|
There is a reciprocal health agreement with the UK,
allowing free hospital and other medical treatment and
some free dental treatment to those presenting a UK
passport. Prescribed medicines must be paid for.
|
| |
| Car Hire |
|
| Driving a car can be a good way to get to
some of the most beautiful and isolated towns and villages
in Slovenia, and rental prices are reasonable. Rental
agencies at Brnik Airport and in Ljubljana have the most
competitive rates. The country's tolls and petrol prices
are relatively inexpensive. Slovenians drive on the right. |
