"Be Safe, Be Insured" Skiers Warned Published: 29 Nov 2013
ABTA has said more holidaymakers are planning to take a winter sports holiday this season, but the number of holidaymakers planning to travel without insurance has risen alarmingly. Research conducted by ABTA showed that 15% of those taking a winter holiday are planning to go skiing or boarding, a rise of 10% from last year. However, 36% will go skiing or boarding without the necessary winter sports insurance, up from 30% last year. The figures for under 35's are even more disturbing with nearly half (47%) saying they weren't going to bother taking out insurance for their holiday. The Deputy Minister of Economy in charge of Tourism, Branimir Botev says Bulgaria ranks fourth in Europe by the rate of development of winter tourism. Speaking at a meeting with the international media present at the World Travel Market exhibition in London last week Botev said "During the past winter, the country has been visited by over 1 million tourists, which is an increase of 8.2%. Approximately 80% of holidaymakers who visit Bulgaria approve of the country’s full smoking ban in enclosed public spaces, according to a local tourists association. Chair of the Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators and Travel Agents, Bayko Baykov, expressed his support on Monday for continuing with the full smoking ban. “It is not true that the turnover of establishments has decreased. It may only be October but if current weather conditions in Borovets are anything to go by then it looks at though skiers & snowboarders are in for a real treat on their holiday to Bulgaria this winter! Fresh snow began falling in Borovets this morning coating the Rila Mountain with plenty of the white stuff normally only seen later in the year. We are delighted to learn that our Charter Airline company Balkan Holidays Airlines (BH Air) has been chosen by the Bulgarian government as the official carrier between Bulgaria and Iraq. The cabinet has authorized the airline to fly routes as agreed in the Agreement on Air Transport between the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Government of the Republic of Iraq, which was signed on the 15th November 1966 in Sofia. As delegates from around the UK prepare to attend this year's Travel Convention hosted by Dubrovnik, ABTA has teamed up with the Croatian National Tourist Offfice to encourage the 600 delegates attending to explore more of the beautiful country during their stay.
