With its beautiful scenery, surrounding nature, and long stretches of sandy beaches, the Bulgarian coastal town of Bourgas earned itself top award by the prestigious Swiss Travel Awards 2012 in the category "Must Visit Destination". It was also given the title "City of Sand Sculptures" for the original Sand Sculpture Festival which attracts thousands of tourists to visit the city each year. The announcement of the award comes two months prior to the biggest Swiss International Tourism Exhibition, which will be held in Lugano.
This year saw the fifth edition of the Sand Sculpture Festival in Bourgas with 18 sculptors from 9 countries, who have made 18 sculptures out of 3,500 tons of special, water-resistant sand representing well-known characters such as Hell Boy, The Beauty, and the Beast, The Magical Pumpkin, Hansel and Gretel, The Giant Castle, a train with magical characters, etc. The exhibition is held in Bourgas Park Lake in the Sea Garden and will continue until the 30th of September, with opening hours of 09.00 till 20.00.
