What is there to do in Bulgaria’s ski resorts when the skiing stops? What is the apres ski scene like? Well if you really want to you can go night skiing in Borovets and Bansko, but come one, have a day off, or should that be a night off! So if you can tear yourself away from the ski runs you’ll find that at night in Bulgaria’s ski resorts is when the fun really starts!  Let’s start with dinner at a local restaurant, or a mehana (meaning tavern) as they call them in Bansko. Bulgarian food is delicious, especially in the numerous restaurants you’ll find in our three featured resorts. All food is sourced

This week we thought we’d look north, not to the wonderful north of England and Scotland, although those are beautiful parts of the world, but the northern part of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast!  There are two big cities on Bulgaria’s coastline, there is Bourgas towards the south, where there are various beach resorts including Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Sozopol. Further north is Varna, which is Bulgaria’s second biggest city. Close to Varna are the beach resorts of Golden Sands, Albena and St Konstantin. It’s fair to say that most British holidaymakers head for Bourgas, staying in Sunny Beach, Nessebar and

The last time we had any skiers on holiday with us, in fact any holiday makers at all, was in March 2020, thanks to Covid. It’s been a tough 20 months, the travel industry has been hit really hard throughout the pandemic. What makes it difficult for travel companies is they can’t just shut your doors and furlough all staff because we need to service all our customers who have holidays booked. All of us here at Balkan Holidays are very happy to do that as the vast majority of our wonderful customers have stuck with us and transferred their holiday to the next season…and then the next season! We really do appreciate all your

A Closer Look at Nessebar Sunny Beach is the most popular resort on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, however so many people say ‘You must visit Nessebar’ – so we did, and this is what we found.. Nessebar is just round the bay from Sunny Beach, if you stand on the middle of the beach and look across there is Nessebar in all its splendour. To reach there you can catch a boat,  bus or taxi, alternatively you can walk along the beach as it curves round into Nessebar itself.  Often referred to as ‘The Pearl of the Black Sea’ it has a rich history stretching back over three thousand years. This

Off piste hotels!  We often talk about the most popular hotels in ski resorts but what about those hidden gems, those family run hotels with the authentic feels or those off the beaten track accommodation outside of the resort centre. Many customers do not want to be around the hussle and bussle of the night life, perhaps they are a self-sufficient group or a family who like to enjoy the comforts of a home from home or hotel in a more quaint location.  Whilst visiting the 3 Bulgarian resorts I had the chance to experience all properties, meet the owners and find out what brings our customers to these resorts. Here are a

Sunny Beach is the most popular resort on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and among the most popular hotels with Balkan Holidays customers are hotels Globus, Fenix and Pomorie, they are good hotels in great locations plus they are exceptional value for money, the perfect combination. Then there’s hotels such as the Melia Sunny Beach and the Laguna Park, both high quality four star all-inclusive hotels, the type of hotels so popular with holidaymakers these days.  However, there are plenty of other hotels to choose from, what is right for one person isn’t necessarily right for another person but there are plenty of

Borovets is the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria and was originally used exclusively by the King of Bulgaria. It used to be called Chamkoria (yes the Hotel Festa Chamkoria was named after this!), Chamkoria translates to Pine forest therefore those who enjoy tree lined skiing you are in for a treat.  Picturesque and photogenic this resort is set on the Northern slopes of the Rila Mountains and offers 58km of piste! (now you’ll know where the Hotel Rila gets their name too!) Borovets reminds me of a small French Alpes resort, which makes complete sense as the resort was styled on Les Arcs in the Savoie region of France! I was

A lot of people have pre conceptions of Sunny Beach, many people think it’s a party resort and not for them, but when you look a bit further into the resort you find a different side of Sunny Beach, quite a few sides actually.  There is indeed a party scene in Sunny Beach. Flower Street, in the centre of the resort does have bars and clubs where you’ll find the partygoers and it’s great fun. However, when you walk just one street away it’s so much quieter and then you have the rest of this glorious and varied resort to discover and enjoy.  Sunny Beach is a large resort and the vast majority of it is

Having previously been a French Alpes exclusive snowboarder, I had the opportunity to visit Bansko in March 2020 just before lockdown started, and boy was I impressed! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the slopes in Bansko, well groomed, corduroy slopes met me and without a mogul in sight! There was a mixed standard of slopes too, not just blue runs but some good reds which were a good width too and to top it off I was also lucky enough to have sunshine too! For the Instagramable photos head to the ‘Bansko loves you ball’ on the piste! A few times throughout our stay we visited the Mountain restaurants as you do for

Nothing quite compares to carving on your board or skis down freshly groomed pistes on a sunny crisp morning, taking in the views of the Pirin Mountains and getting a serious adrenaline rush at the same time. Quite frankly, there's no better place to do it than on a  Bansko Holiday, without a doubt Bulgaria's most modern ski resort. Here are five reasons why it's the best place to be if you're into the sport. Location Situated as it is at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, you're lucky to have a whole UNESCO World Heritage Site to explore at your leisure. Bulgaria's landscape is at its wildest here, and
