ABTA has said more holidaymakers are planning to take a winter sports holiday this season, but the number of holidaymakers planning to travel without insurance has risen alarmingly.

Research conducted by ABTA showed that 15% of those taking a winter holiday are planning to go skiing or boarding, a rise of 10% from last year. However, 36% will go skiing or boarding without the necessary winter sports insurance, up from 30% last year.

The figures for under 35's are even more disturbing with nearly half (47%) saying they weren't going to bother taking out insurance for their holiday.

ABTA head of communications Victoria Bacon said: "It is great to see winter sports holidays continuing to grow in popularity and we would urge anyone planning a winter sports holiday to make sure that they have specific insurance.

"Unfortunately accidents can happen and can lead to costly medical bills, but having the right kind of cover means people can make the most of their time on the slopes without having to worry."
