Set amidst the majestic forest-clad Rila Mountains, once a hunting ground for Bulgarian Kings, Borovets was Bulgaria’s first ski resort, dating from the 19th century when it was only known to an exclusive few.
Now everyone has the opportunity to experience this fun-packed, snow filled spectacular destination, Borovets truly has got the lot and is firmly established as one of Bulgaria most popular ski resorts. At a height of 1,300 metres Borovets is a lively resort full of bars and cafes and these along with the many clubs make après-ski a real attraction. Quite rightly, skiing is its prime concern and Borovets is justly popular with all grades of skiers, with a setting that’s near perfect right at the foot of Mount Moussala (2925 metres), the highest peak on the Balkan region. Borovets is easily accessible only 72 kilometres away from Sofia and just 126 kilometres away from Plovdiv. With a well-developed lift network Borovets can carry up to 15,600 tourists per hour and provides quick access to its ski runs. If you haven’t discovered this premier ski resort yet, you’re in for a treat!
The ski schools in Borovets enjoy an excellent reputation, offering tuition 4 hours a day, six days a week, from friendly and helpful instructors, guaranteeing success and an experience to remember. It won't take long for any beginner to conquer the nursery slopes outside the hotel Rila, before heading for the gondola lift and the more challenging runs at the top of the Yastrebets Mountain.
The choices for the intermediates are fantastic with excellent skiing in the exciting Yastrebets and Sitnyakovo areas. The well-planned lift system includes the 5 kilometre, 6-person Yastrebets gondola lift, which opens up a wealth of enjoyable runs, ranging from wide sunny boulevards in the Moussala basin, to scenic looping trails through the trees. At the top of the gondola you can try one of the longest downhill runs in Bulgaria, as well as enjoying some great skiing on the slopes of the wind-free basin underneath Moussala peak.
Advanced skiers can relish testing their skills on the World Cup run and enjoy skiing on the more difficult intermediate runs.
